Health assessment for Missouri Electric Works (MEW) Proposed National Priorities List Site, Cape Girardeau, Missouri, Region 7. CERCLIS No. MOD980965982. Preliminary report

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6700837

The Missouri Electric Works (MEW) site has been proposed for listing on the National Priorities List (NPL) by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The facility sells, services, and remanufactures electric motors, transformers, and transformer controls. It has been in its present location since 1953. Past disposal practices have resulted in polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) contamination of soil and sediment. Based on the available information, the site is considered to be of potential public health concern because of the risk to human health resulting from possible exposure to hazardous substances at concentrations that may result in adverse human health effects. As noted in the Human Exposure Pathways Section below, human exposure to PCBs may be occurring and may have occurred in the past via ingestion of and dermal contact with on-site soils and sediments. Recommendations are presented to restrict public access and contact with on-site soils and sediments.
