The British coal mining industry is the world's oldest and most highly developed. Total British coal reserves are estimated at 45,000,000,000 tons, of which some 5 percent may be suitable for surface mining; the rest is only minable by underground methods. Coal resources total 164,000,000,000 tons but may be increased following the current extensive exploration program. The industry's expansion plans call for a total output of 135,000,000 tons (15,000,000 of this from surface mining) by 1985 and 170,000,000 tons (20,000,000 of it from surface mines) by the year 2000. Production from underground mines in Britain is won almost entirely from fully mechanized longwall faces. The year 1979 was one of achievement for the United Kingdom coal mining industry. After a difficult year in 1978, the industry made a very strong recovery: (1) output from underground coal mines increased by nearly 4,000,000 tons, the first increase since 1963; (2) productivity rose by 5 percent; (3) coal sales increased by approximately 10,000,000 tons; (4) the number of fatal accidents was 30, the lowest annual figure ever recorded, and the overall casualty rate was also lower; and (5) the National Coal Board achieved its financial objectives for the year.
