The dominant processes for producing near-zero-energy projectile-frame protons in H{sub 2}{sup +}-He collisions at 4-keV ion energy have been experimentally identified. The 1{ital s}{sigma}{sub {ital u}} to 2{ital p}{pi}{sub {ital u}} and 3{ital d}{sigma}{sub {ital g}} transitions that produce these protons occur at internuclear separations of the H{sub 2}{sup +} ion that are 2.5--3 times the equilibrium separation.
