Fluid driven rotating device for rotary drilling
This is a fluid-powered drive mechanism for rotating a string of drill pipe or tubing, with a drill bit thereon, in a well bore while cleaning out, working over, or drilling the well. The device eliminates the use of a Kelly joint to connect between the swivel of the drilling rig and the drill pipe. In addition, it eliminates the rotary table, the drive mechanism, the Kelly drive bushing, and other mechanisms. The pipe-rotating device is supported from a traveling block by a swivel which is connected to an elevator and consists of a housing which contains chain-driven gears. The fluid-drive motor is connected to the top of the housing cover. A shaft from the motor connects to a sprocket within the housing. The rotatable pipe passed through the housing and is rotated by the chain-drive mechanism. Torque arms on either side of the housing have sheaves which roll on taut, supporting cables. (3 claims)
