Multiphoton ionization and third-harmonic generation in krypton and xenon

Spectroscopic information from the rare gases xenon and krypton was obtained through a series of experiments involving resonantly-enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI). Experiments involving two lasers studied ionization and third-harmonic generation (THG) from the coupling of the 6s' (1/2)/sup 0//sub 1/ and 5f states of xenon. Strong effects on both THG and ionization are detailed. The laser-induced coupling of the states allows THG in the highly positively dispersive regions of the medium in which it is normally forbidden. Four-photon excitation of the even-parity Rydberg states converging to the /sup 2/P/sub 3/2/ and /sup 2/P/sub 1/2/ limits in krypton and xenon was demonstrated. New observations have been made of autoionizing states and of states of different total angular momentum than previously observed. Photoelectron spectra (PES) and photoelectron angular distributions (PEAD) were obtained for (3 + 2/ REMPI via the 6s (3/2)/sub 1//sup 0/ state of xenon. Comparison with calculated results obtained through the use of multichannel quantum defect theory (MQDT) were made.
