Data requirements for a lakeshore nuclear power plant dispersion model

Journal Article · · Proc., Annu. Meet., Air Pollut. Control Assoc.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6693323
Recently, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) published a notice in the Federal Register entitled ''Criteria for Preparation and Evaluation of Radiological Emergency Response Plans and Preparedness in Support of Nuclear Power Plants'', (NUREG-0654, FEM REP-1). Modifications of the existing meteorological monitoring system and development of modeling capabilities may be required to comply with new NRC regulations. These requirements are to support real-time assessment of radioactive releases and to aid in the implementation of emergency preparedness decisions following the classification of an accident. The work includes the following: Real-time meteorological data acquisition, data processing, and data archiving. Real-time site-specific modeling for estimating atmospheric transport and diffusion, plume position and dimensions, and radioactivity concentrations (Class A Model). Real-time meteorological forecasting capability (up to 24 hours) for determining predictions of atmospheric transport and diffusion (Class B Model). Simultaneous real-time remote interrogation of meteorological data and /CHI//Q (concentration/source strength) estimates by the plant personnel, NRC staff, and emergency response organizations (e.g.: Ohio Disaster Services).
