Rain of troubles

Journal Article · · Science; (United States)
OSTI ID:6693024
The extent of acid precipitation throughout the U.S. is examined. Until the fall of 1979, acid precipitation was thought to be a regional problem primarily centered in the industrial areas of the country. Reports of acid-contaminated streams in the Rocky Mountain wilderness have raised the prospect that acid precipitation may trouble the entire country. The origins of acid rain and its potential environmental impacts are discussed. As the U.S. prepares to switch from oil and gas to coal to meet its future energy requirements, the amount of acid precipitation is expected to increase. (4 maps, 5 photos)
