Stratospheric sulfuric acid layer: evidence for an anthropogenic component

The question of whether the layer of small aerosol particles in the stratosphere would still persist in the absence of volcanic eruptions is addressed. Comparing measurements of present stratospheric aerosol concentrations in Laramie, Wyo., with measurements made 20 yr ago indicates that the background concentrations of stratospheric aerosols may have been increasing at a rate of 9%/yr. While some of this increase is attributed to volcanic activity, evidence that the increase may be due to anthropogenic sulfur emissions is presented. (2 graphs, 24 references)
