Mode cooperation in a submillimeter wave gyrotron

The phase bunching of a gyrating electron beam under the second harmonic operation reduces the starting current for the fundamental operation, in a submillimeter wave gyrotron. Such mode cooperation observed experimentally is shown and considered on the basis of the computer simulation results. The cooperation really reduces the starting current of the fundamental operation and increases total output power, which results in increasing the beam efficiency.
