It is shown that on continuous and pulsed photolysis of the (PtCl/sub 6/)/sup 2 -/ ion in acetonitrile, the lowest electronically excited state is photoactive and the reaction mechanism involves homolytic cleavage of a platinum-chlorine bond. The mechanism has been established and the rate constants determined for the reactions in which (PtCl/sub 5/)/sup 2 -/ and (PtCl/sub 4/)/sup -/ complexes participate, which lead to the overall photosubstitution reaction of the (PtCl/sub 6/)/sup 2 -/ ion. The effect of the nature of the solvent (H/sub 2/O, CH/sub 3/CH) on the efficiency of formation and reactivity of Pt(III) complexes has been examined.
