Mud system classifications and product functions employed in the Fluids File are defined. These definitions reflect general industry practice and terminology, and to a great extent incorporate descriptions adopted by the American Petroleum Institute and the Internation Association of Drilling Contractors, although no endorsement nor approval is claimed or intended. Basic mud system classifications include water-base sytems, low solids systems, oil-base systems, and air, gas, and mist systems. The product classification, into which each drilling fluid additive has been cataloged, are those generally accepted by the Subcommittee on Drilling Fluids. The additives include alkalinity, pH control additives; bactericides; calcium removers; corrosion inhibitors; defoamers; emulsifiers; filtrate reducers; flocculants; foaming agents; lost circulation materials, lubricants; shale control inhibitors, surface-active agents; thinners, dispersants; viscosifiers; and weighting materials.
