For the past five years, scientists at the Univ. of Colorado have been measuring acid precipitation in a subalpine watershed of the Colorado Rockies. Their measurements of snow and rain and creek water show a strong trend of increasing acidity that is traceable to the chemical reactions of burning fossil fuels. Possible effects of acid precipitation on the watershed's aquatic ecosystem are examined. Other U.S. areas being contaminated by acid rain are discussed.
