Outflow and radiation cones in the narrow-line region of NGC 4151
- Bochum Ruhr-Universitaet (Germany, F.R.)
Emission-line profiles from various positions between 2 and 6 arcsec angular distance from the nucleus of NGC 4151 are utilized to describe the velocity field in the spatially resolvable part of the narrow-line region (NLR) of this galaxy. Half-peak level positions of the lines measured in rings at 2 and 4 arcsec nuclear distance show a sinusoidal behavior with position angle reminiscent of a rotating disk tilted and blueshifted relative to the main galactic plane of NGC 4151. However, simple single-disk models are incompatible with the line shapes. Arguments are presented which lead to a scenario consisting of the normal galactic rotation combined with two outflow cones. The cloud stability and its relation to the distribution of the outflowing material are discussed. It is suggested that the elongation of the NLR is caused by this outflow. If the simple outflow scenario extracted for NGC 4151 is a dynamic constituent of a majority of Seyferts, the general correlations between radiation beams and elongations with the radio axis suggest that the radio sources are related to outflow cones. 51 refs.
