Algeria spurs vast gas program

Of the many hydrocarbon developments under way in Mediterranean states, the program for oil and gas exploration, field development, pipeline construction, and refinery, petrochemical, and LNG-plant building in Algeria is by far the most ambitious. Based on one of the world's largest gas fields at Hassi R'Mel and the biggest Algerian oil field at Hassi Messaoud, Algerian hydrocarbon development is progressing via a 5-yr master plan. If only the bulk of the work is completed by 1980 or 1981, it would represent a massive achievement by the Algerian state oil company, Sonatrach. Tabular data give a look at the larger Algerian gas fields. Tabular data also provide firm Algerian LNG capacity. A foldout map presents plans and progress on Algeria's massive hydrocarbon-development program. To meet the need for exports, gas injection in oil fields, and domestic consumption, the Algerian objective is to push gas production to some 3.88 tcf/yr. Target for gas-export projects is some 2.12 trillion/yr--all, except for the trans-Mediterranean pipeline gas, for delivery as LNG. New gas-liquefaction facilities are being added steadily at Arzew and Skikda, together with pipelines to serve them.
