Hunter and Amory Lovins are building a combination home, office, and indoor farm to prove their thesis that the built environment can be energy efficient and environmentally benign. Insulation features of the building include R-60 ceilings and R-40 walls, earth berms, R-5.3 glazing, an integrated solar greenhouse, and a natural air infiltration rate of fewer than 0.2 changes per hour. No auxiliary space heating is needed. The house is designed to be 130% passive solar on the theory that it is better to vent heat than to run short. The author reports a walking tour of the building to explain the planning and construction details. Payback on the energy-saving features is one year, although the total construction cost will take 40 years to pay back. 11 figures.
