This paper demonstrates that the advantages of steam generator tube sleeving are dependent on parameters that are specific to each utility. Topics considered include the causes of tube degradation (stress corrosion cracking, intergranular attack, denting, erosion-corrosion, fatigue, fretting, pitting, wastage), segmentation by degradation type, the location of tube degradation, the sealable sleeve, the economics of sleeving (replacement power cost, capacity factor, cost), and delaying steam generator replacement. It is concluded that steam generator sleeving is one of the most attractive investments a financially constrained utility can make, particularly with the use of removable plugs. Many of the benefits produce immediate cash benefits, while others are longer term and require the use of probabilities and expected value.
