The MHD structure of an open magnetotail boundary

The results of a theoretical and observational study of an open magnetotail boundary are presented. An MHD (magnetohydrodynamics) model for the complete magnetotail boundary is presented. The tailward evolution of the rational discontinuity-slow expansion fan model is quantitatively obtained for different magnetosheath magnetic field strengths and orientations. Its properties are studied. Two observational studies of the IMP 8 magnetotail boundary crossings were carried out using an analysis that combines plasma and magnetic field measurements.
