Surfactants have found a wide range of uses in the oil and gas industry. Of primary interest is the use of foaming agents for the removal of water and oil from gas wells, and air drilling. Aqua-Flo Co., after a period of experimentation and field testing, formulated a workable liquid water-soluble soap stick which has been a definite improvement over the old solid-type soap stick. Such a foaming agent is characterized by: (1) being all-purpose; (2) unloading the hole evenly in air drilling; (3) foaming hydrocarbons; (4) being nontoxic, nonflammable, and noncorrosive; (5) economical operation; and (6) being biodegradable. Recently Aqua-Flo has been developing a dry or stable foam for use in place of mud for drilling water-sensitive formations and lost-circulation zones. Results so far are encouraging and indicate that the use of stable foam will promote even greater speed and economy in drilling and clean-out operations.
