Refinery-wide blending control and optimization
The author discusses how refinery automation involving plant-wide integration of on-line blending systems supports the realization of maximum overall benefits. Significant refinery product value added results from minimizing costly quality giveaway and optimizing blending components utilization. Real-time integration of the planning/scheduling functions and key process unit operations supplements the benefits gained from on-line quality control and recipe optimization. The benefit level achieved is largely determined by the extent of the plant-wide integration and the blending automation strategies selected. Refinery blending systems have become an important area for operations management technology. Depending on the existing quality giveaway and product price differentials, gasoline, distillate and fuel oil blending control and optimization with a refinery-wide concept can deliver returns of three to eight million dollars per year for a 100,000 bpd light oils refinery.
