There are a variety of techniques used in the oil field to periodically remove paraffin deposited on downhole tubular goods and in surface flowlines. Some of these removal methods may have certain drawbacks. Hot-oiling, a popular method of removing deposited paraffin, may contribute to formation damage if used repeatedly in low temperature, low pressure wells. This work describes a water-base chemical system which has been found to effectively remove paraffin from metal surfaces. A simple procedure is outlined for testing aqueous paraffin removal systems. A variety of applications for such a chemical system and some field results also are described.
