Limerick probabilistic risk analysis highlights

This paper describes the performance of a risk assessment for a dual-unit nuclear power plant with a General Electric boiling water reactor (BWR/4) and a Mark II containment. The areas evaluated include Limerick plant design, Limerick site and population effects, and techniques, methods, and data for performing such a study. The Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA) involved a quantitative evaluation of accident initiators and the possible course of accidents following the initiating event. The radioactive source term in the containment as a result of the postulated accident was evaluated. The containment was next analyzed to determine the mechanism and potential location for failure. The release from the containment was then calculated so that a determination could be made of the effect on and the risk to the general public. The Limerick risk assessment is complete in that it is an assessment of public risk that includes the frequency of core damage accidents and the potential public consequences. The Limerick PRA was the first complete commercially performed risk assessment in the history of the industry.
