Geologic constraints on mining and recovery of coal in the western US

The authors consider that USGS and USBM coal resource figures, which incorporate only thickness and depth and neglect many other major geologic constraints on mining, are misleading. In particular, they produce erroneous data for the western US coalfields. A new, highly selective data base should be developed for reserve calculations. This should include only coal for which rank, quality, and mineability are reasonably well known.
