A glow discharge has been run in helium at 260--2600 Pa and currents up to 5 mA with the walls of the discharge tube cooled with liquid nitrogen. Measurements have been made of the populations of the metastable and upper excited states, and also of the concentration of the metastable molecules He/sub 2/(2/sup 3/..sigma../sub u//sup +/). The temperature of the neutral gas at the axis of the discharge has been determined from the Doppler broadening of the singlet lines. The voltage-current characteristics of the positive column give the electron concentration in the discharge. The balance equations for He(2/sup 3/S) give the rate constant for the exitation from the ground state to the metastable state for E/N in the range (1.5--12) x 10/sup -17/ V x cm/sup 2/. Experimental results are compared with theoretical calculations made by others.
