Levels in /sup 43/K and /sup 44/K excited by the. beta. decay of /sup 43/Ar and /sup 44/Ar

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev., C; (United States)
The nuclides /sup 43/Ar and /sup 44/Ar have been produced by spallation reactions on vanadium targets at E/sub p/ = 600 MeV. The subsequent ..beta.. decays to /sup 43/K and /sup 44/K have been studied via delayed ..gamma..-ray singles and ..gamma..-..gamma.. coincidence techniques. In /sup 43/K, excitation energies and ..gamma..-branching fractions have been determined for 19 levels. The logft values imply J/sup ..pi../ = 3/2/sup -/, 5/2/sup + -/ for the ground state of /sup 43/Ar. For /sup 44/Ar, evidence is found for four new ..beta.. branches and J/sup ..pi../ = 1/sup +/ is assigned to the levels at 2326 and 2574 keV on the basis of the ..beta..-decay selection rules. The proposed decay scheme accounts for ..gamma.. transitions between 10 levels, the first excited state being located at 182.6 keV. The structure of these nuclei is discussed in the weak coupling scheme.
