Considerations concerning the construction of an expert system for control system design
This thesis considers the construction of an expert system for computer aided control system design. The contributions of the thesis are: implementing the first expert system for computer aided control system design; developing a heuristic approach for lead-lag compensation of single-input, single-output systems; stating some traits of a human expert in control system design, creating an architecture for an expert system for control system design; representing in a rule-based expert system a heuristic approach to the design of lead-lag compensation for single input, single output continuous linear systems, sampled data linear systems, and nonlinear system; coordinating the symbolic computations of the inference engine with the numeric computations of the external programs; providing the nonmonotonic reasoning required by design revisions; checking the consistency of reason maintenance rules that implement nonmonotonic reasoning; and constructing the knowledge sources for design. Examples of applying the knowledge bases to the design of control systems are provided; and examples are given of the rules used to represent the knowledge and of the rules was to guide the development of the problem solution.
