The Japanese FBR development program
- Power Reactor and Nuclear Fuels Development Corp., Tokyo (Japan)
- Japan Atomic Power Co., Tokyo (Japan)
The goal of the Japanese fast breeder reactor (FBR) development program is to establish the technology for a plutonium recycling system using FBRs that should be superior to the uranium utilization system of light water reactors (LWRs) with respect to both safety and economy. Commercialization would be achieved between 2020 and 2030, according to current plans. The FBR development in Japan actually started with the establishment of Power Reactor and Nuclear Fuel Development Corporation (PNC) in 1967. The experimental fast reactor Joyo, built at O-Arai Engineering Center (OEC), attained criticality in April 1977. The R D and the system demonstration (plant construction and operation) of FBRs have made and will make stepwise progress through such stages as experiment (Joyo), prototype (Monju), demonstration (DFBR), and commercialization in Japan. To advance the development of the FBR to the level of commercialization, introduction of various new design concepts and key innovative technologies are necessary. The R D on these key technologies is being conducted, and it is expected that these technologies can be ready for plant application between 2005 and 2010.
