This conference brought together nearly 300 persons from industry, electric utilities, and academia in North America, Europe, Japan, and Africa to discuss the technical and policy issues surrounding power quality assurance in modern industrial societies. The conference comprised two general plenary sessions and six technical sessions on issues specific to electricity end-users. Power quality is emerging worldwide as an important issue for electric utilities and their customers. As our advanced technical societies use more and more microprocessors and sensitive digital circuitry, assuring an adequate quality of electric power becomes increasingly difficult, requiring an understanding of the causes of power disturbances, how these disturbances can be mitigated, and the appropriate roles of electric utilities and their customers. The primary goal of the First International Conference was to begin to address these issues on a global basis by bringing together utility planners, customers, and power quality experts from many fields and many countries to share their knowledge and experience. The conference program covered a spectrum of power quality topics, ranging from technical matters such as measurement and mitigation techniques to electric utility policy and planning. A total of 49 papers were presented. The two plenary sessions focused on power quality from the end-user perspective and on utility power quality programs. The technical sessions covered such topics as measurement, mitigation, and control of power quality disturbances; power quality in residential, commercial, and industrial applications; and electric utility network-based power quality improvements. Individual papers are indexed separately.
