Despite the considerable energy-saving potential of automatic vent dampers and the development of standards for the design and installation of electrically operated models for existing furnaces, many furnace manufacturers have disregarded the large retrofit market because they fear that faulty installation could lead to carbon monoxide poisoning, fire, or explosion. Now, the Automatic Damper Manufacturers Association, formed by eight manufacturers who sell only dampers that are listed by the American Gas Association or Underwriters Laboratories, is developing a program to ensure the safety and quality of these devices as retrofit equipment by strictly monitoring the integrity of installation via initial and follow-up safety checks.
