The use of real-time optical processors in embedded computing
Optical processing technology can be applied to embedded computer systems to perform specialized tasks and general computation. An overview of several processing architectures will be presented. In particular, a class of architectures which uses one-dimensional acousto-optic devices (AOD) to achieve two-dimensional processing has been studied. These architectures are applicable to radar image formation and 2-D correlation coprocessors for real-time embedded computers. Real-time radar image formation by such a system has been achieved in the laboratory with components that can be applied in an embedded computer environment. Data on the performance of this coprocessor will be presented, along with a discussion of the potential extensions of this technology to other embedded computer problems. 13 refs., 12 figs.
