Title: Development of a cost-effective solar assisted heat pump system

Conference ·
OSTI ID:6678224

A program of research and development is in progress whose goal is the development of a cost-effective solar assisted heat pump system. The results of computer simulations of the system being developed under this program are presented. The system has as its central element a highly efficient water-source electric-power-driven vapor-compression heat pump. This heat pump will be supplied with thermal energy by low-cost collectors, with a low-temperature storage element serving as a buffer between the collectors and the heat pump. Operation of collectors and storage in the 5 to 40/sup 0/C (40 to 100/sup 0/F) temperature range will allow significant reductions in the cost of these components. These same components accommodate cooling very efficiently. The heat pump extracts heat from the air-conditioned space during the day, and the system rejects the accumulated heat from storage at night to the cooler outside ambient. The effect on system performance of varying collector characteristics is presented.
