An analytical study carried out by Advanced Technology Inc. for the U.S. Department of Energy, on the feasibility of using a Rankine bottoming cycle with an organic working fluid such as Freon, Fluorinol, or toluene (ORC) to recover the exhaust heat energy from marine diesel engines indicates that if the projected 1985 fleet of ships with 1500-3200 bhp diesel power were fully fitted with ORC bottoming systems operating at 15-20Vertical Bar3< effectiveness, 1.5-2.0 million bbl/yr of marine diesel fuel could be saved out of a total projected fleet fuel usage of 10 million bbl/yr without ORC. The vessels to which ORC could fruitfully be applied include inland river and intercoastal push-tow boats, offshore supply boats and tugs, and inland tugs. The optimum utilization of the recovered power would be to augment the vessel's propulsion system. Very limited data suggest that such systems could be cost-effective, especially if fuel costs continue to escalate.
