A number of nuclear power plants are approaching the end of their licensed 40 year operating periods, and the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is considering the conditions under which to extend their operating licenses. This paper, based on the work done for the draft Generic Environmental Impact Statement for License Renewal of Nuclear Power Plants recently issued by the NRC, reports that the low level radioactive waste (LLRW) generated during decommissioning would change very little as a result of a 20 year period of extended operation.
