Composite catalyst beds show promise for hydrotreatment of heavy fuels

Two coal liquids and one petroleum residue were hydrotreated using catalyst beds containing two catalysts. Nine commercial catalysts, containing nickel, cobalt, molybdenum, and tungsten, were tested in different combinations for their performance in hydrodenitrogenation, hydrodesulfurization, hydrodemetalation, hydrocracking, coke deposition, and deactivation. Temperature zoning of the reaction bed was also tested. Results are discussed. 2 tables.
