Title: Activities of the New York State Geological Survey during participation in the Crystalline Repository Project of the US Department of Energy, 1984-1986: Final report

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6675821

In 1983, the US Department of Energy (USDOE) selected 235 crystalline rock bodies (CRBs) in the Northeastern, Southeastern and North Central US for evaluation as candidates for the second national radioactive waste repository site. The State of New York was one of these and the candidate crystalline rock bodies were the Adirondack Mountain region and the Hudson Highlands in northern and southern New York State, respectively. From 1984 to 1986, the USDOE, under the Crystalline Repository Project (CRP), funded New York State through the New York State Geological Survey (NYSGS) and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) to review and comment upon the New York (principally Adirondack) section of periodically-issued USDOE documents. To accomplish the most effective evaluation of these documents, the NYSGS established a comprehensive data base concerning all available information published and unpublished on the geology of that part of New York State. The development of a comprehensive geologic data base for the Adirondack Mountain region was the major project undertaken by the NYSGS-CRP towards the evaluation of that region for potential as a radioactive waste disposal site. Activities of the NYSDEC were conducted independently and are not described in this report.
