This article reports on an investigation of the molecular mass and isomer composition of esters of pentaerythritol and C/sub 5/-C/sub 9/ synthetic fatty acids (SFA) by means of an R-10-10 chromatograph/ mass spectrometer. The chromatogram was recorded on the basis of the total ion flux (TIF), and the mass spectra of the homologues were recorded at the maximum of the chromatographic peak. The quantitative evaluations of the molecular mass composition of the tetraesters of pentaerythritol and fatty acids were performed by normalizing the peak areas on the chromatogram registered according to the TIF, and by normalizing the intensities of the maximum peaks in the mass spectra of the homologues. A comparison of the molecular mass composition of the two ester samples revealed that compounds with 20-30 carbon atoms in the molecule are represented in the composition, with corresponding molecular masses of 472-612. The esters present in greatest quantity have a 556 molecular mass. In order to identify the structure of the molecules of the higher homologues by means of the mass spectra, structures were established for the most prevalent isomers, and the absence of specific isomeric forms was proven.
