The Hanford Site covers 560 mi2 of semi-arid land that is owned by the US Government and managed by the US Department of Energy-Richland Operations Office (DOE-RL). It is located in the Columbia Basin and northwest of the City of Richland, Washington, which lies approximately 5 mi from the southernmost portion of the Hanford Site boundary and is the nearest population center. In early 1943, the US Army Corps of Engineers selected the Hanford Site for the production and purification of plutonium. The purpose of this report is fourfold: it describes the underground storage tanks (UST) at the Hanford Site regulated by title 40 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 280 (EPA 1988a); it defines the compliance programs completed, underway, or planned by the affected Hanford Site contractors; it provides costs of program compliance; and it defines long-range planning to comply with 40 CFR 280 after 1998.
