Effect of variability on the V/V/sub MAX/-test

Knowledge of the distribution of quasars in space has been obtained primarily from applications of the V/V/sub MAX/-test to complete flux-limited samples of sources. The intrinsic luminosities of many quasars are variable. Other objects, such as X-ray or ..gamma..-ray sources, for which one might wish to use the V/V/sub MAX/-test are also variable. However, previous formulations of the V/V/sub MAX/-test have not included the effects of variations.
