The synthesis of {alpha}-Si{sub 3}{sup 15}N{sub 4} by nitridation of silicon powder using a {sup 15}N{sub 2}/H{sub 2} mix and the conversion to {beta}-Si{sub 3}{sup 15}N{sub 4} are described. The {sup 15}N NMR spectra of these two solid phases have been obtained, and they broadly correlate with the crystal structures. The {sup 15}N shift range for the {alpha}-polymorph covers nearly 25 ppm, suggesting that the sensitivity of the {sup 15}N chemical shift to structural factors may be greater than that of {sup 29}Si shifts.
