Flow localization and shear band formation in a /gamma/sub p/rime/ strengthened austenitic stainless steel, JBK-75, was investigated by compression of reduced-gage-section, cylindrical specimens deformed in a strain rate range of 10/sup 3/ to 10/sup -3/s/sup -1/ and from 650/degree/C to 1100/degree/C. Localized flow was always associated with dynamic recrystallization. Other mechanisms for flow localization, including the effects of adiabatic heating on /gamma/sub p/rime/ precipitate dissolution, are discussed. 20 refs.
