Forests: a significant energy resource

The Northeast Solar Energy Center is a regional center under contract to the Department of Energy to encourage use of regional resources of solar, water, wind, and biomass energy in the nine states of the northeast. This article briefly reviews use of energy in the region, energy costs, estimates of potential energy from forest resources, use of residues for fuel, harvesting of wood chips for fuel, production of wood pellets, wood fuel markets, regional marketing, combustion systems, and emissions from wood combustion systems.
