MFA's wood for fuel policy

The Michigan Forest Association's statement on the use of wood for fuel states that, while Michigan imports 90% of its fuel and has a surplus of standing wood available with growth exceeding harvest, indiscriminate cutting, over-reliance on wood as a wide-scale solution to energy needs and use of wood for fuel when it could be used for manufactured products could be costly errors. Forest improvement can be effected by careful firewood cutting and commercial thinning for the fuel market. Wood wasted in harvesting, sawmilling, and manufacturing should be used for energy. However, the greatest contribution of the forest to the energy needs of Michigan is provided by wood substitutes for more energy intensive materials, such as aluminum, steel, and petrochemicals. Wood fuel should be a partial, rather than a wide-scale, replacement for existing fuels. Using wood in place of metal and chemical products requiring high energy inputs will save energy. The greatest benefit in energy conservation can be obtained by use of timber for needed products and use of the waste and cull for fuel.
