The Gas Research Institute (GRI) has funded the development of an internal inspection system for use in 4- to 6-in.-diam (nominal sizes) gas mains. This effort began in 1986 with an exploratory research effort to determine the feasibility of a pipe traveler capable of operating within these pipe diameters in a live gas main. Working since 1989, Foster-Miller, Inc., has developed a robotic pipe inspection robot called the MOUSE. The MOUSE system is a modular, semiautonomous robot that consists of a mobile platform and various sensor and task modules that can be carried by the platform. The modular nature of the MOUSE system allows the robot to be custom configured to meet the respective requirements of different users and different applications. GRI is also sponsoring several development efforts for MOUSE-compatible sensors capable of detecting pipe defects while being transported by the MOUSE platform.
