Bottom-hole catalytic heater using heat transfer liquid

Patent ·
OSTI ID:6666475
A heating apparatus is provided for evenly distributing the heat from a bottomhole heater in which high temperatures are generated by contacting an air-fuel mixture with an oxidizing mixture. This is accomplished by jacketing the heater and completely or partially filling the jacketed space with a suitable heat-transfer material. The fuel portion of the feed may be selected from a wide variety of substances, such as light hydrocarbons, typically natural gas, propane, butane, and unsaturated derivatives thereof, kerosine, crude oil, and the like. Mixtures of 2 or more of these materials may be used in gaseous or liquid form. The catalyst used also may be selected from a wide list of materials and are preferably used in very dilute concentrations, such as 0.05 to about 0.5 wt %. They may be supported on materials having a large surface area. The heat-transfer liquid is preferably a eutectic mixture of diphenyl and diphenyl ether.
