Matrix acidizing presupposes that the reservoir has sufficient natural permeability to support production if the natural flow channels are not damaged. Formations having low natural permeability are not generally good subjects for matrix treatments. Many failures result from attempts to matrix acidize zones which would be better candidates for fracturing. Effective matrix acidizing requires penetration of the entire productive interval. The fluid flows through the porous structure of the rock and reacts chemically with material which restricts flow. Matrix acidizing is performed at pressures low enough to prevent hydraulic fracturing of the formation. Matrix acidizing relies on the cleanup of the critical area surrounding the well bore where the pressure drop is greatest. As a result of both laboratory and field studies, Dowell has developed a guide for use by Dowell engineers in planning mud acid matrix treatments in sandstone reservoirs. This Sandstone Acidizing Guide combines laboratory tests with field data to aid in predicting treatment results. It also provides a basis for selecting the proper acid, additives, and volumes to use according to well conditions and results desired.
