The excited states of the {open_quotes}halo{close_quotes} nucleus, {sup 11}Li , have been investigated by means of the pion capture reaction,{sup 14} C({pi}{sup {minus}},thinsp pd){sup 11}Li . Excited states have been identified at 1.02{plus_minus}0.07 , 2.07{plus_minus}0.12 , and 3.63{plus_minus}0.13 MeV . The continuum part of the {sup 11}Li missing mass spectrum is found to contain a major component which is consistent with {sup 11}Li breakup into one of the {sup 9}Li excited states and two strongly correlated neutrons. {copyright} {ital 1998} {ital The American Physical Society}
