Advantages and disadvantages of materials for wind turbine blades (aluminum, fiberglass, and wood) are reviewed as well as energy considerations in their manufacturing. Properties of laminated Douglas-fir, technological techniques, durability, and effects of moisture, humidity, and fatigue are discussed. The fabrication of wood into wind turbine blades is illustrated for staggered laminates and hollow blade design. The use of the airbag layup system for obtaining proper twist of the blade is also illustrated. (MJJ)
