Data for geothermal wells in the Geysers - Clear Lake area of California as of November 1980
This report presents the location, altitude, total depth, dates of drilling, and status for 336 geothermal wells drilled in The Geysers - Clear Lake area of California as of November 1980. Well statistics have been compiled to make this information more readily available for geothermal studies in The Geysers - Clear Lake area. Of these 336 wells, 151 were producing steam for 15 electrical generating units with a total installed capacity of 944 megawatts electric. Steam condensate and surface water were being injected into 12 wells, and 6 others were capable of future injection. In addition, 53 wells were abandoned, 1 was flowing uncontrollably (a blowout), and 113 were idle. These geothermal wells have provided the only direct evidence of the areal extent of the hydrothermal steam system. Some of the wells have provided detailed subsurface data on the structure, lithology, and fluid flow in this active hydrothermal region. This report also summarizes the development of The Geysers geothermal field from 1921 through November 1980.
