Laser fusion hollow glass microspheres by the liquid-droplet method

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6662907

Commercial glass hollow microspheres have proven to be unacceptable for use as high-density laser fusion targets. We have developed processes at LLL for the production of laser fusion glass microspheres of high quality. In this paper we describe one such process, the liquid-droplet method. This process is now fairly well understood, and glass microspheres ranging from 100 to 350 ..mu.. O.D. and 0.5 to 20 ..mu.. wall thickness can be produced routinely that meet the stringent specifications of high-density targets.
