When TiO/sub 2/, reduced by H/sub 2/ or CO, is placed in an ambient of gas-phase water and illuminated with band gap light, H/sub 2/ is evolved. Adding a small amount of O/sub 2/ completely retards this reaction. A dark reaction of reduced TiO/sub 2/ with water to form H/sub 2/ also occurs at temperatures above 200/sup 0/C. These results show that H/sub 2/ evolution is not the result of catalytic water photolysis but a photoassisted reaction of water with oxygen vacancies produced by the reduction.
