The European Fast Reactor Utilities Group (EFRUG), which comprises electricity-producing utilities from France, Germany, Great Britain, and Italy has set economic objectives from the EFR to compete with pressurized water reactor (PWR) plants when EFRs are introduced to the market. According to the program, the EFR entered in the second design stage April 1990, a 3-yr period called concept validation (phase 2). The objective of the current studies is to optimize and to consolidate the design of the nuclear island with respect to feasibility, safety, economics, and plant availability based on technical results of phase 1 (1988-1990) in line with the requirements stated by EFRUG.
